Coffee & Agroforestry Trees

For many coffee farmers in Rwanda, the costs and crop losses associated with pruning and rejuvenating their farms keeps them harvesting old, overgrown and less productive trees. By receiving coffee trees in our Fellowship, Fellows grow the size of their farms, replace old trees and offset the harvest decrease from pruning. We provide coffee tree seedling varieties which the Rwanda Agriculture Board has approved as best for disease-resistance and production, and our staff agronomists oversee their growth from germination through to distribution, and the proper preparation and planting in each farm.

Alongside coffee trees, providing agroforestry trees is a key part of our Fellowship Program. We offer a variety of tree types, selected specifically per region based on farmer needs, local climate change realities and pest management properties. Many trees provide shade and protect coffee from overexposure to sun, others provide fruit or a source of timber, ensuring that farmers aren’t stripping native forests, and all help maintain the soil and protect it from erosion, enhance farm biodiversity and sequester carbon from the air.
